Why Gabapentin and Lyrica Aren’t Fixing Your Neuropathy

At LaserTech Pain and Back Relief Center, we treat idiopathic peripheral neuropathy using advanced cold laser therapy and individualized treatment protocols designed to support nerve healing, improve nerve function, and reduce pain in patients who have often struggled to find relief elsewhere.
Idiopathic neuropathy is one of the most common forms of neuropathy we see at LaserTech, and one of the most frustrating for patients to navigate. The word “idiopathic” simply means that no clear underlying cause has been identified. You’ve had the tests. You’ve seen the specialists. And the answer you’ve been given is that they don’t know why your nerves are misfiring.
That doesn’t mean the condition isn’t real. It absolutely is. And it doesn’t mean it can’t be treated effectively.
What we’ve found clinically is that idiopathic neuropathy tends to involve a combination of actual nerve damage and abnormal nerve transmission. The nerves aren’t just causing pain because of poor blood flow. They are structurally damaged and communicating incorrectly with the brain. There may also be some degree of circulation impairment contributing to the problem, particularly at the extremities where blood flow can be reduced.
Understanding this distinction is what allows us to treat it differently than other types of neuropathy, and more effectively than a one-size-fits-all approach ever could.
Symptoms can vary from person to person, but patients with idiopathic neuropathy most commonly describe:
Many people notice their symptoms gradually worsen over time, especially when treatment has focused only on managing pain rather than addressing what’s actually happening in the nerves.
Most idiopathic neuropathy patients arrive at LaserTech having already been prescribed Gabapentin (Neurontin), Pregabalin (Lyrica), or Duloxetine. These medications are commonly used because they can dull the pain signals your damaged nerves are sending to the brain. For some people they provide partial relief, at least initially.
The problem is that they don’t repair nerve damage. They don’t improve circulation. And they don’t address why the nerves are misfiring in the first place. The underlying condition continues to progress while the medication simply turns down the volume on the symptoms.
Over time, many patients find their neuropathy medications become less effective, the side effects become harder to manage, or both. Dizziness, fatigue, cognitive fog, weight gain, and balance problems are among the most common complaints. For neuropathy patients who already struggle with balance and stability, those side effects can make daily life more difficult, not less.
That’s why we focus on treating the root cause rather than masking the symptoms.
Because idiopathic neuropathy involves damaged nerve tissue and abnormal nerve communication, our treatment targets the nerves themselves rather than just the pain signals they’re producing.
Treatment at LaserTech is built around a combination of technologies selected based on your specific presentation and the underlying causes of your condition. For idiopathic neuropathy, that typically includes:
Our computerized laser systems are focused on healing damaged tissue at a cellular level. Through a process called photobiostimulation, the lasers stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanisms, encouraging cellular regeneration, reducing inflammation, and supporting the recovery of damaged nerve fibers. This is distinct from the lasers we use primarily for circulation-driven neuropathy. The technology is matched to the condition.
The ENB is a technology specifically designed to support healthier nerve function and help retrain how nerves communicate with the brain. For patients whose neuropathy involves abnormal nerve transmission, this is often a key part of the treatment plan.
Many patients also benefit from additional therapies that address contributing factors beyond the nerve tissue itself. This can include nutritional and inflammation-based support, functional rehabilitation, balance-focused therapy, and neurological pain approaches tailored to your situation.
Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes. Most patients follow a structured plan over several weeks, and many begin to notice meaningful changes within the first few treatments.
The pattern Dr. Zimmerman sees consistently is patients who have been managing their neuropathy for years without real improvement, who finally begin to see meaningful change once the treatment targets what’s actually causing the problem.
Margaret H. came to LaserTech after being evaluated by multiple specialists including a podiatrist, pain clinic, vascular surgeon, and neurological clinics at both Barrow and Banner University, without finding relief. She had also tried TENS units, physical therapy, and numerous home remedies. After treatment with Dr. Zimmerman, she reported approximately an 85% decrease in neuropathy symptoms. She was able to wiggle her toes for the first time in years, the constant burning pain became manageable, and she regained mobility she had lost.
Dodie C. described daily electrical shocks in her feet and toes along with severe burning in her lower legs, even while taking both prescription and over-the-counter medications. After treatment at LaserTech, those electrical shocks stopped entirely, and the burning sensation became only occasional and mild. She noted she was sleeping through the night and felt like a new person.
Results vary depending on the type and severity of neuropathy involved, and we are always transparent about what we believe we can and cannot help with. But these outcomes reflect what becomes possible when the approach actually matches the condition.
If you’ve been diagnosed with idiopathic neuropathy, or if you’ve been living with unexplained burning, tingling, or numbness in your feet or hands without finding real relief, Dr. Zimmerman offers a free consultation at our Scottsdale clinic.
During that visit, he will work to understand the specific type and underlying causes of your neuropathy, explain how our treatments work, and be honest with you about whether he believes we can help. We only recommend treatment when we have confidence in the approach based on your individual case.

With more than 30 years of experience treating chronic and complex pain conditions, Dr. Zimmerman has dedicated his career to helping patients find relief when other treatments have failed. His expertise includes conditions such as sciatica, neuropathy, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and chronic nerve-related pain. Dr. Z combines advanced, non-invasive therapies with a whole-body approach focused on reducing inflammation, improving nervous system function, restoring movement, and addressing the underlying causes of pain, not just masking symptoms. He is also the author of Unlocking the Chronic Pain Code, where he shares his approach to long-term pain relief and functional recovery. [Read Dr. Z’s full bio here.]
