Arthritis in the Heat: How Arizona’s Climate Affects Joint Pain

Scottsdale and Phoenix area residents know that Arizona summers are brutal. Triple-digit temperatures, intense sun, and the kind of dry heat that feels like opening an oven door every time you step outside. For most people, summer means slowing down a little and staying cool. But for the more than 50 million Americans living with arthritis, the seasonal shift can bring a whole new set of challenges…and sometimes, surprising ones.

You might expect the heat to soothe your aching joints. And sometimes, it does. But for a lot of arthritis sufferers, summer in the desert actually makes things worse. Read on to learn what’s really going on with your joint pain in the hot summer months in Scottsdale and what you can do about it.

Does Heat Actually Help or Hurt Arthritis?

The relationship between weather and joint pain is something researchers have studied for years, and the honest answer is that it’s complicated, and it’s different for everyone.

Heat in general can help relax muscles, improve circulation, and temporarily ease stiffness, which is why a warm shower in the morning often feels like a relief. But ambient heat, the kind you’re just living in when you walk outside in July in Scottsdale, is a different story.

Extreme heat can cause the body’s tissues to expand and swell. For joints that are already inflamed…whether from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or another condition…that added swelling can increase pressure and pain. Heat also causes the body to work harder to regulate its temperature, which can be taxing on the whole system, including an immune system that’s already overactive in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

Then there’s dehydration. Arizona’s dry climate accelerates fluid loss, and too many people simply don’t drink enough water during the summer months. Joints rely on synovial fluid for lubrication and cushioning. When you’re dehydrated, that fluid decreases, leading to more friction, stiffness, and discomfort in already-compromised joints.

What About Monsoon Season in Arizona?

If you’ve been here long, you’ve probably noticed that your joint pain often flares during monsoon season (roughly July through September), when humidity spikes and barometric pressure shifts rapidly.

Barometric pressure changes are one of the most commonly reported weather-related triggers for arthritis pain. When pressure drops, as it does before a storm, the tissues around joints can expand slightly, increasing pressure on sensitive nerves. This is why many arthritis patients swear they can “feel the weather coming” in their knees or hands.

If your pain seems to spike on stormy days or during the height of monsoon season, you’re not imagining it.

Practical Tips for Managing Arthritis Pain During an Arizona Summer

Living with arthritis in the desert doesn’t have to mean suffering through the summer. A few smart adjustments can make a real difference:

Stay consistently hydrated. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already behind. Aim for more water than you think you need, especially if you’re spending any time outdoors.

Time your activity wisely. If you exercise or walk outside, early morning is your best window. Once temperatures climb past 90°F, the heat stress on your body, and your joints, increases significantly. Evening walks work too, though the pavement and air hold heat well into the night during peak summer.

Use heat and cold strategically, not reactively. Cold therapy (ice packs, cool compresses) can help bring down localized swelling and inflammation after activity. Heat therapy is better for loosening stiff joints before movement. Understanding which one to reach for, and when, makes both more effective.

Keep your home cool and consistent. Drastic temperature shifts, like going from 110°F outside to an aggressively air-conditioned building can cause muscles to tense and joints to stiffen. Try to keep your environment at a moderate, stable temperature.

Don’t abandon movement. It’s tempting to stay still when you’re in pain or when it’s too hot to go outside. But inactivity makes arthritis worse over time. Low-impact indoor options like swimming, gentle yoga, or walking in a cool environment help maintain flexibility and keep inflammation at bay.

Watch your diet during summer. Certain foods…heavily processed items, excess sugar, alcohol…can promote inflammation. Summer barbecue culture doesn’t always help here. Adding anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, fatty fish, berries, and olive oil can support joint health from the inside out. Nutritional and inflammation-based care is something we address as part of our comprehensive treatment approach at LaserTech.

When Self-Care Isn't Enough

The tips above can help manage day-to-day symptoms, but if you’re finding that summer consistently brings on significant arthritis flares, or if your pain has been getting progressively worse regardless of the season, it may be time to look beyond self-management.

At LaserTech Pain and Back Relief Center in Scottsdale, we use advanced, non-invasive therapies specifically designed to address the root causes of arthritis pain, not just mask the symptoms. Treatments like cold laser therapy work to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support healthier joint function. For patients who need a more comprehensive approach, our Additive Care options include functional rehabilitation, soft tissue therapies, and nutritional support tailored to your specific condition and how your body responds to treatment.

Many of our patients have come to us after trying medications, injections, and other therapies that provided only temporary relief. Our goal is to get you results that last so you can stay active, stay comfortable, and enjoy life year-round, even in the middle of our record-breaking Phoenix summers.
