What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Despite the name, degenerative disc disease (DDD) isn’t actually a disease. It’s a term used to describe the natural wear and tear that happens to the intervertebral discs in your spine over time. These discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, and as we age, they can lose hydration, height, and elasticity, making them less able to cushion and support the spine the way they once did.

As the discs degenerate, they can bulge, crack, or flatten, which may lead to increased friction between vertebrae, the formation of bone spurs, and pressure on nearby nerves. This is often the underlying cause behind other conditions we treat, including herniated discsspinal stenosis, and sciatica. While degenerative disc disease is most common in the lower back and neck, it can occur anywhere along the spine.

Not everyone with disc degeneration experiences pain, and the severity of symptoms doesn’t always match what’s visible on an X-ray or MRI. But for those who are symptomatic, the pain can range from a mild, nagging ache to debilitating, life-altering discomfort.

Common Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

  • Chronic low back or neck pain that comes and goes, or flares up periodically
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, lifting, or twisting
  • Pain that feels better when walking or changing positions
  • Stiffness, especially first thing in the morning
  • Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into the buttocks, legs, arms, or hands
  • Muscle weakness in the extremities
  • Periods of intense flare-ups followed by weeks or months of milder symptoms

Because these symptoms overlap with several other spinal conditions, an accurate diagnosis from a qualified provider is an important first step in building an effective treatment plan.

How We Treat Degenerative Disc Disease in our Scottsdale Clinic

There’s no single therapy that addresses every factor involved in disc degeneration. That’s why LaserTech uses a combination of non-invasive technologies and hands-on care, tailored to each patient’s specific condition, symptoms, and goals.

Spinal Decompression

Our Super Traction Decompression (TDS) system applies a precise, controlled distraction force to the spine, gently creating space between the vertebrae. For patients with degenerative disc disease, this can help take pressure off compressed discs and irritated nerves, improve circulation and nutrient exchange to the disc, and support the body’s own healing response. It’s often a core part of the treatment plan for patients dealing with disc-related back or neck pain who want to avoid surgery.

Cold Laser Therapy

Our Computerized Multi-Laser Therapy (CMLT) system uses cold, low-level laser light to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes at the cellular level, all without heat, needles, or downtime. For degenerated discs and the surrounding tissue, this can help calm irritated nerves and support tissue repair alongside decompression therapy.

Shockwave Therapy

Chronic disc degeneration often comes with secondary soft tissue involvement, including muscle tension, adhesions, and scar tissue that can compound pain and slow healing. Our Radial Pressure Wave (Shockwave) Technology uses deep-penetrating sound waves to help break up adhesions, reduce scar tissue tension, and jump-start the healing process in the muscles and soft tissue surrounding the spine, an important piece of resolving pain that decompression and laser therapy alone may not fully address.

Additive Care

Degenerative disc disease rarely has just one cause, which is why many of our patients also benefit from Additive Care, a set of supportive therapies used alongside our core technologies. Depending on your specific needs, this may include functional rehabilitation to rebuild core strength and spinal stability, manual and soft tissue therapy to release muscle tension and improve mobility, and nutritional and inflammation-based support to help your body heal more effectively. Building a plan around your whole health picture, not just the disc itself, gives our patients the best chance at sustainable, long-term relief.

Patient Testimonial

"This unique and non-invasive treatment plan ABSOLUTELY WORKS! I've been getting treatment here for several months now. And my life of pain has finally ended. For the last 30 years, I experienced severe low back pain & sciatica pain that kept progressing, despite the many treatment options I tried, such as physical therapy, acupuncture, cortisone injections, chiropractic care and more. None of the other care options I tried were able to resolve my ongoing issues with degenerative disc disease, arthritis and spinal stenosis. I would see some pain relief and improve for a while, but the debilitating pain would always return. Finally, I was referred to Dr. Zimmerman by a friend and my life has not been the same since then. I'm finally free of pain and physically able to resume my active lifestyle of hiking, biking, paddle boarding, and yoga. This treatment gave me my life back and I am beyond grateful for their expertise and excellent care!"
